Boosting Eco-friendly Energy Efficiency through the Development of Transport EMS Technology

[Engineering Journal – Reporter Kim Ha-nee] The world is currently focusing on energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development.

In particular, the tightening of environmental regulations and the growing demand for improved energy efficiency have driven the need for enhanced performance and diverse functionalities in the transport sector. This has led to a surge in interest in energy technologies—specifically, Energy Management Systems (EMS) for transport.

Consequently, domestic transport EMS technologies are being refined to meet stricter environmental regulations by boosting efficiency, while also incorporating advanced solutions to enhance safety and user convenience.

Crucially, the efficient and eco-friendly design and operation of vehicles—the core of the transport sector—along with the development of technologies for managing vehicle fuel and exhaust emissions, have become essential requirements.

Furthermore, there is a growing need for EMS solutions that integrate with broader social systems. Such systems aim to leverage autonomous driving technology to improve vehicle safety, alleviate traffic congestion, and provide environmentally friendly transport services. Domestic companies are working diligently to develop and advance these technologies.

Within this field, Engine Techwin Co., Ltd. has garnered significant attention for its diverse range of eco-friendly technologies. These include biogas generators that utilize renewable fuel, LPG engines compliant with "Stage V" emission standards, eco-friendly LPG-powered forklifts (designed to replace aging diesel-powered models), electric forklifts, and engines fueled by DME (dimethyl ether).

Founded in 2016, Engine Techwin is a company deeply committed to environmental stewardship. Its portfolio includes biogas power generation systems that harness renewable energy from sources such as livestock manure, sewage, and food or municipal waste; auxiliary engine power packs for sanitation vehicles running on natural gas; industrial engines fueled by LPG or CNG; and vehicles and power generators powered by DME. Between 2018 and 2021, in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Energy Research, the company developed an engine powered by dimethyl ether (DME)—an eco-friendly fuel—and integrated it into a vehicle, drawing significant attention. A vehicle equipped with this engine was subsequently produced and exported to Turkey in 2021 for a pilot project, with the aim of exploring potential commercialization in the local market. Furthermore, the company has developed a DME-powered generator based on this engine technology, which is currently in operation at an eco-friendly "smart farm." Plans are also underway to adapt this technology for use in eco-friendly, DME-fueled marine vessels.

Na Pyeong-cheol, CEO of EngineTechWin (pictured), stated, "The environment and energy are the most critical elements for human existence, and their importance will only continue to grow. As conventional energy sources deplete, the adoption of renewable or eco-friendly energy is no longer a choice but a necessity; therefore, developing technologies that enable the efficient use of such energy is essential."

In line with this, EngineTechWin intends to focus its efforts on environment- and energy-related sectors, advancing its technological capabilities and expanding its business scope.

Leveraging its existing expertise in engine development, the company plans to develop systems incorporating eco-friendly engines for industrial vehicles, marine vessels, and construction machinery. Additionally, it aims to intensify its focus on biogas generator technology, seeking to enter both domestic and international markets and further expand its biogas power generation business.

As part of this strategic roadmap, EngineTechWin secured "Stage V" certification—a European standard—for its 50kW-class LPG engine designed for construction machinery, earning global recognition for its technical prowess. The engine developed by Engine Techwin is a 2.6L unit designed for construction machinery—specifically forklifts in the 2-ton to 3.5-ton class. By incorporating an electronic multi-port injection (MPI) fuel supply system, it offers superior output, higher performance, improved fuel efficiency, and greater reliability compared to conventional mixer-type engines, earning it a reputation as one of the best in its class globally.

Currently, 2-ton to 3.5-ton forklifts account for over 65% of the total forklift market. In Europe and North America, in particular, LPG-powered forklifts hold a significant 70–80% market share. Consequently, obtaining European certification for Engine Techwin’s engines is expected to create substantial business opportunities for expansion into overseas markets.

CEO Na stated, "To foster research, development, and technological advancement in the field of transport-related Engine Management Systems (EMS), we need government policy support and initiatives to encourage widespread adoption. It is also essential to actively raise awareness through education and the dissemination of information regarding EMS technology." He added, "We must strengthen collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions—as well as between large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises—while expanding support for the research, development, and application of these technologies."

He further remarked, "Guided by the principles of integrity, creative challenge, and the 'SPEED' philosophy (Speed, Passion, Emotion, Exactly, Doing), Engine Techwin is committed to fostering sustainable growth and enhancing corporate competitiveness through a positive mindset. We will continue to strive to become a company that fulfills its social responsibilities, enabling our team members to realize their dreams."
