[Gas News = Reporter Park Gwi-cheol] Engine Techwin Co., Ltd. (CEO Na Pyeong-cheol), a company specializing in the development of gas engines and gas generators, announced on the 20th that it has successfully completed the development of an LPG engine for construction machinery—designed to meet "Stage V" standards for fine dust reduction—and has secured European certification.
The 50kW LPG engine, which recently received European certification, was developed with support from the "Global Top Environmental Technology Development Project"—an initiative managed by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute and the Eco-friendly Vehicle Technology Development Group—between 2019 and 2020. However, commercialization was not possible without meeting the stringent quality requirements of construction machinery manufacturers and obtaining European certification, which is essential for entering overseas markets.
The newly developed 2.6-liter engine is designed for use in 2- to 3.5-ton construction machinery (such as forklifts). By incorporating an electronic multi-port injection (MPI) fuel supply system, the engine achieves higher output, superior performance, improved fuel efficiency, and greater reliability compared to conventional mixer-type engines, placing it among the best in its class globally.
Currently, 2- to 3.5-ton forklifts account for over 65% of the total forklift market. In Europe and North America, in particular, LPG-powered forklifts hold a significant market share of 70% to 80%. Consequently, the acquisition of European certification for this engine is expected to offer substantial commercial potential as the company expands into international markets. According to the company, while some domestic manufacturers already use engines that have obtained Stage V certification, others still rely on imported engines that hold European certification. With this engine now securing European certification, it is expected that these manufacturers may consider switching to a domestic engine.
Furthermore, as there are many overseas construction machinery manufacturers that require such an engine to enter the European and North American markets, the company plans to establish an international distribution network and actively promote the product to facilitate such market entry.
Na Pyeong-cheol, CEO of EngineTechWin, stated, "We will do our utmost to develop business models that expand the application of this engine beyond forklifts to a wider range of construction machinery, such as loaders, excavators, and tractors." He added, "We aim to provide greater convenience to our customers by actively highlighting the engine's various benefits, including its contribution to reducing fine dust."
