Through a three-year research and development project in collaboration with the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL), Engine Techwin has developed a system capable of upgrading biogas—derived from the anaerobic digestion of food waste and livestock manure—to a high-purity level (approximately 99%). Additionally, the company has developed and implemented a high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) system that utilizes this low-purity biogas as fuel.
This system is currently installed and in operation at a digestion gas plant in Icheon, managed by KEC System.
Key advantages of this system include:
1. It upgrades low-purity biogas to a quality comparable to natural gas, allowing it to be used in equipment designed for natural gas (such as vehicles, burners, water heaters, and boilers).
2. It incorporates a biogas-fueled CHP generator, which can supply heating and cooling to nearby greenhouse facilities during the winter and summer months.
3. During the spring and autumn—when demand for heating or cooling is lower—the system can either upgrade the biogas to a high-purity fuel (similar to natural gas) or direct it to the CHP generator to produce electricity and heat, the latter of which can be used as a thermal source for the digestion tanks.
The attached photos show the site where this system is installed.
