Engine Techwin Co., Ltd. (CEO Na Pyeong-cheol) announced on the 2nd that it successfully held a demonstration of its "Biogas-based Power/Gas Distributed Energy Production System"—developed in collaboration with the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL, President Kim Se-jong)—at a joint livestock manure resource recovery facility in Icheon.
The demonstration was conducted as part of a project titled "Development of Technology for High-Purity Methane Production and Distributed Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Generation Using Biogas," led by Engine Techwin Co., Ltd. with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.
Conventional methods of utilizing biogas—typically through simple combined heat and power (CHP) generation—struggle to respond dynamically to fluctuations in demand or load, as well as to emergency situations. Furthermore, the heat generated during the power production process is often difficult to utilize consistently, preventing the full energy potential of the biogas from being realized.
In contrast, the newly demonstrated Biogas-based Power/Gas Distributed Energy Production System is the first in Korea to employ energy-conversion technology that balances methane production with electricity generation based on fluctuating energy demand. This groundbreaking system enables an energy utilization rate of over 90% at all times.
Key technical features of the system include a proprietary biogas-fueled CHP generator—boasting an electrical efficiency of 34% and an overall efficiency of 90% or higher—and a biogas upgrading unit equipped with a high-selectivity membrane module capable of operating at high pressures exceeding 15 bar. Na Pyeong-cheol, CEO of Engine Techwin Co., Ltd. and the lead researcher for the project, stated, "We are developing a biogas-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) generator capable of operating even with low-concentration biogas. We have already secured relevant patents and are currently in the process of obtaining 'Green Technology' certification."
Dr. Jeon Yong-woo of the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL)—who served as a co-lead researcher overseeing the development of biogas upgrading and integrated smart operation technologies—added, "The widespread adoption of this system will help increase the utilization rate of currently untapped biogas in Korea. I will do my utmost to support the lead organization in developing business models to expand the use of this system."
