Engine Techwin, in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Energy Research, BioFriends, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, the University of Ulsan, and Suwon University, has successfully developed a 4L-class diesel engine that utilizes DME—a clean-burning fuel—to reduce fine particulate matter. This engine has been integrated into 2.5–3.5 ton trucks.

This technology has the potential for broader application, extending beyond vehicles to include land-based and marine power generators. Notably, the conversion process is highly commercially viable, as it requires only the modification of the diesel engine’s fuel supply system, resulting in a limited scope of work and low conversion costs.

In countries with less stringent emission regulations and a high number of aging vehicles, this technology—which allows for the easy conversion of diesel vehicles to run on the eco-friendly fuel DME—is expected to offer significant commercial potential, driven by its substantial environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness.

The attached photo shows a vehicle equipped with this technology; it was produced as a test vehicle for use in Turkey, where field testing is scheduled to continue through the first half of 2022.

Since older diesel engines are major sources of fine particulate matter, the adoption of DME—an eco-friendly fuel—is expected to yield significant environmental improvements.

Photos from a demonstration of the developed vehicle are also attached.
